GTA 6 had "all the studios in the world" planning around the Rockstar Games behemoth, A Plague Tale dev says

Every developer in the world is probably planning their new game releases around the impending attention vacuum known as GTA 6, according to a dev working on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

Speaking to Eurogamer about the upcoming prequel's launch plans, Asobo producer Eric Chort says the studio was very conscious throughout production that its game might land within GTA 6's blast zone. But Asobo likely weren't alone.

"All the studios in the world were thinking about it. When you know that GTA is coming, you know that in terms of marketing, in terms of players, the time to play games, GTA is like the ogre, it's the biggest one," Chort explains. "So you try to adapt, you... try to avoid it. But then this year we see that there are only good games, or at least a lot of good games, so we're like, okay, that's the industry, and we try to make the best game possible."

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, a more action-oriented prequel in the so-far excellent series, is instead coming out on August 27. Late summer would normally be a pretty safe and quiet time to launch a big game project, but not this year...

GTA 6's November release has ensured that basically every major publisher is trying to cram their releases into a packed couple of months before the Rockstar Games behemoth. Marvel's Wolverine, Gears of War: E-Day, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Control Resonant, Silent Hill Townfall, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and so much more are coming out within the same six week period.

Indeed, the launch calendar is so packed that a game of chicken has already started between this year's September games.
