Stephen Spielberg says he doesn't need to make a horror movie after watching Weapons: "It satisfies me so completely"

Stephen Spielberg has high praise for Zach Cregger's Weapons, saying that it satisfies his need to make a truly scary horror film.

"I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch," Spielberg told Empire. The iconic director has made everything from kid-friendly fodder to some pretty scary sci-fi... but he's yet to make an outright horror pic.

"When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I need to scratch. I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me want to make a horror film that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie."

This delights me as an OG fan of Whitest Kids U'Know, which is the comedy troupe that Cregger has been a part of since its initial founding in 2003. The troupe eventually got their own sketch comedy series of the same name, with Cregger playing everyone from Abraham Lincoln to a guy who just kind of carries around a gallon of PCP.

It's worth noting that the brief shot of hot dogs in Weapons, seven hot dogs to be exact, is a direct nod to a WKUK sketch starring the late Trevor Moore... whose tragic death moved Cregger to write Weapons. A prequel about Aunt Gladys, Amy Madigan's Oscar-winning villain, is now in pre-production.
